Understanding Photography Types and Styles
Regardless of which photographic style you choose, always select one that best suits your personality. Often candid photos are more personal and enjoyed.

Photojournalistic Style
Although today most photography styles incorporate a photojournalistic feel to the pictures taken, the true photojournalistic session is where the photographer has little to no involvement at all. The session is where a specific activity or location is chosen to have photos taken at. Most often, the individual or couple goes about naturally while the photographer works “behind the scenes” to capture the shots.

Typically a photographer will stand 10-30 yards away, allowing for privacy and intimacy. Candid pictures are easy to acquire during this type of session because the individual or couple stays undisturbed by any surrounding distractions.

Guided Photography Style
Many people are not always sure what to do when the camera is in front of them. This is where the guided session lends a great deal of input and direction by the photographer. Initially he/she will collaborate directly with the individual or couple to determine the locations of the shoot, then he/she be a guide through the shots and poses that are traditional and any previously discussed.

Make sure to familiarize yourself with the photographer...your likes, dislikes, and style. That way, when out shooting, you will discover poses and settings that will fit your personality and taste.

Because the session is guided, many photographers will capture a combination of both traditional and candid shots with a few creative photojournalistic shots in the mix as well. However, typically the pictures are more traditional and posed.

Combined Style
This type includes shooting guided and photojournalistic photography, typically a longer session is required, but not always. More time allows the photographer to guide you through the traditional, catching candids in between, and leaving just enough time for them to capture a photojournalistic feel. Often times, schedule a few different locations and wardrobe changes to achieve the best variety.
